This text describes, analyses and synthesises a wide range of contemporary issues from research and practice in the field of individual and collective workplace learning and development. Enables students and managers of learning and development (L&D) to understand the theory and practice of L&D in organizations. Explores the concept of learning from a variety of perspectives through the use of examples of research and practice from all over the world. Takes a broad view of learning as encompassing both explicit and implicit and individual and collective learning processes. Argues that the practice of L&D should be based upon a rigorous theoretical and empirical base. While the success of Open Source software like Linux or Apache has been documented extensively throughout all mainstream media, the rise of PHP has gone largely unnoticed. Still, the Web scripting language PHP is the most popular module for the Apache Web server, according to an E-Soft survey (www.e-softinc.com/survey/). Netcraft studies have found that PHP is in use on over 6% of all Web domains in the world (see www.netcraft.com/survey).That’s an incredible market penetration for a rather specialized product.This popularity continues to rise exponentially. Increasingly, this is being reflected in traditional media: As of May, 2000, more than 20 books about PHP have been published in different languages, with more in the pipeline. Commercial players are beginning to join the bandwagon: PHP is included with Web servers, for example C2’s Stronghold, and Linux distributions. A new company, Zend Technologies, has been formed to provide commercial add-ons and support for PHP.A long list of large-scale Web sites employ PHP, as well as hundreds of thousands of small to medium Web sites.

Применение Internet-технологий как для частичной поддержки очного учебного процесса (blended learning), так и дистанционного обучения (без очного контакта), базируется на специальном программном обеспечении, вопросам выбора которого посвящена данная статья. Так, наряду с применением готовых фирменных программных продуктов или разработкой вузом собственной единой системы, возможен подход, при котором каждый преподаватель может разработать свою персональную систему управления учебным процессом (теоретически это возможно). Автор статьи является сторонником такого положения, когда при наличии в вузе налаженной технологии образовательного процесса на основе стандартной (покупной) оболочки проводятся научно-методические разработки на базе создания web-сайтов в рамках творческой инициативы преподавателей.
