For over a century, America's nutrition authorities have heralded milk as «nature's perfect food,» as «indispensable» and «the most complete food.» These milk «boosters» have ranged from consumer activists, to government nutritionists, to the American Dairy Council and its ubiquitous milk moustache ads. The image of milk as wholesome and body-building has a long history, but is it accurate? Recently, within the newest social movements around food, milk has lost favor. Vegan anti-milk rhetoric portrays the dairy industry as cruel to animals and milk as bad for humans. Recently, books with titles like, «Milk: The Deadly Poison,» and «Don't Drink Your Milk» have portrayed milk as toxic and unhealthy. Controversies over genetically-engineered cows and questions about antibiotic residue have also prompted consumers to question whether the milk they drink each day is truly good for them. In Nature's Perfect Food Melanie Dupuis illuminates these questions by telling the story of how Americans came to drink milk. We learn how cow's milk, which was associated with bacteria and disease became a staple of the American diet. Along the way we encounter 19th century evangelists who were convinced that cow's milk was the perfect food with divine properties, brewers whose tainted cow feed poisoned the milk supply, and informal wetnursing networks that were destroyed with the onset of urbanization and industrialization. Quite a number of books have been published about the zapovedniks of Russia (which are strictly protected State nature reserves) but so far most of those books have been scientific. There are very few colourful popular publications, which can be readily understood by a broad readership. The creators of this book have worked hard to make their contribution to fill this gap. The easy, narrative text immerses readers into the world of preserved nature, giving the feeling that they are travelling within those beautiful areas. At the same time one can get to know the history of the zapovedniks, which was often difficult and dramatic. However, it is not enough to merely read about nature. It is also essential for understanding to see that nature. The wonderful photographs of landscape and wildlife, taken by our leading nature photographers, also form a significant and exciting part of this book. The authors and publishers of this book believe that when readers see and understand the beauty of our Russian Nature Reserves – their forests, mountains and tundra; their steppelands and coastlines – they will feel at one with nature. Данное учебное пособие предназначено для студентов факультетов иностранных языков педагогических вузов. Основная цель пособия – научить студентов находить в тексте, анализировать и интерпретировать различные языковые явления современного английского языка. В пособие включены разнообразные упражнения по основным разделам курса «Лексикология английского языка». Это задания, связанные с дискурсивными характеристиками слов, этимологией, словообразованием, семантикой, парадигматическими и синтагматическими характеристиками слов, фразеологией. Специальный раздел посвящен особенностям употребления английского языка в США, а также проблемам международного английского языка, что является важным в эпоху глобализации. Задания предназначены как для занятий в аудитории, так и для самостоятельной работы студентов. Некоторые упражнения основаны на сопоставлении английского и русского языков, что, на наш взгляд, помогает глубже понять то или иное языковое явление. Задания пособия различаются по объему и по трудности. Выбор упражнений для анализа и обобщений остается за преподавателем, который проводит семинарские занятия в группе. Хочется надеяться, что материал пособия поможет студентам хорошо подготовиться к экзамену по лексикологии и создаст прочную базу для написания курсовых и выпускных квалификационных работ.
