Learn to paint, learn to see–it will change your life. On Sabbatical, Janice carries her art pack and folding stool into one of the most incredible landscapes on the planet: the canyons, deserts, mountains, and river valleys of the greater Southwest. Awed, amazed, inspired, and humbled by what she finds there, she sketches and paints en plein air. The family fishes, hikes, catches bugs, chases lizards, digs fossils, photographs, and studies plants. The year-long campout in National Parks and Forest Service sites becomes a journey of the heart. The family grows to love the way the great outdoors is put together. Part travelogue, part natural history, part field course in art appreciation, the author records her development as an artist as she learns to paint and learns to see. To her surprise, a spiritual awakening sneaks up on her, and the journey turns into something more–a pilgrimage.

Developed soon after World War II, the de Havilland Beaver has become one of the most successful and long-lived designs in aviation history. The Beaver was conceived as a “half-ton flying pickup truck” capable of setting down on land, water, and snow. Since its conception the Beaver has been adopted worldwide, becoming the floatplane of choice for island-hopping along the Pacific Northwest, flying into the Arctic, transporting missionaries and doctors into remote spots in Africa, and serving as a support aircraft in Antarctic expeditions. The Beaver also became “the generals’ Jeep” during the Korean War — and the generals’ favorite transport to fishing spots in peacetime.
The Beaver Hall Group and Its Legacy

An exploration into Montreal’s Beaver Hall Group and its legacy of women painters who now rank among Canada’s most outstanding artists. Today it is difficult to imagine that the art of Montreal’s Beaver Hall Group was once shocking. As these Modernists struggled against academic art, critics such as Samuel Morgan-Powell ranted – “rough,” “meaningless” “blatant plastering and massing of unpleasant colours in weird landscapes” – and likened their paintings to the “cacophonous riot of metallic yowlings” of jazz that was invading the city. Moreover, unlike their contemporaries, the Group of Seven, the Beaver Hall Group dared to break with tradition and accept women members. The result was a legacy of some of the finest women painters Canada has so far produced. In 2005, Evelyn Walters gave them deserved attention in her acclaimed book, The Women of Beaver Hall: Canadian Modernist Painters . Now, a follow-up, The Beaver Hall Group and Its Legacy delves into the engrossing life stories of the twenty-five artists who belonged to the Beaver Hall Group and the Women of Beaver Hall. Over seventy-five images gleaned from museums and private collections highlight the work of these pioneering artists who changed the course of Canadian art. Written for student and scholar alike, The Beaver Hall Group and Its Legacy is a must for every art lover’s library.
