John Dewey (1859-1952) is an American philosopher and psychologist most notably remembered for his theories on progressive education. He grew up in the rapidly industrializing town of Burlington, Vermont, where he was able to witness increasing social and economic division of the classes. Although he displayed little vivacity or imagination as a child, he was immensely analytical and spent years teaching and writing on a wide range of philosophical ideas. Of his twenty-one books and countless articles, «Human Nature and Conduct» is one of his best-known; it draws from Dewey's West Memorial Foundation lectures at Stanford University. This work criticizes the morality of the past as being too abstract and reliant on arbitrary rules rather than on a scientific understanding of human nature. Dewey argues that truth changes over time, and therefore life must be based on human experiences and utilizing one's knowledge in coping with those experiences.

Лидия Ивановна Аверьянова (1905–1942) – талантливая поэтесса и переводчица, автор пяти не вышедших в свет сборников стихов, человек драматической и во многом загадочной судьбы. Лирика Л. Аверьяновой вызвала сочувственный интерес у Ф. Сологуба, А. Ахматовой, В. Набокова, Г. Струве и др. Наиболее ценная часть ее литературного наследия – «Стихи о Петербурге»; в 1937 г. они обрели статус «стихов-эмигрантов» и посмертно, в извлечениях, публиковались за рубежом под присвоенным автору псевдонимом А. Лисицкая. Поэтическое творчество Л. Аверьяновой представлено в книге во всей возможной полноте, большая часть стихотворений печатается впервые. В основу издания легли материалы из фондов Пушкинского Дома (СПб.) и Гуверовского института (США).

Quite a number of books have been published about the zapovedniks of Russia (which are strictly protected State nature reserves) but so far most of those books have been scientific. There are very few colourful popular publications, which can be readily understood by a broad readership. The creators of this book have worked hard to make their contribution to fill this gap. The easy, narrative text immerses readers into the world of preserved nature, giving the feeling that they are travelling within those beautiful areas. At the same time one can get to know the history of the zapovedniks, which was often difficult and dramatic. However, it is not enough to merely read about nature. It is also essential for understanding to see that nature. The wonderful photographs of landscape and wildlife, taken by our leading nature photographers, also form a significant and exciting part of this book. The authors and publishers of this book believe that when readers see and understand the beauty of our Russian Nature Reserves – their forests, mountains and tundra; their steppelands and coastlines – they will feel at one with nature. Realising its riches, they will want to make their own contribution to the good cause of nature conservation.
