Hiking the Southwest's Geology: Four Corners Region takes curious hikers on a journey through time that explores the Colorado Plateau – an immense land of canyons, mesas, and isolated mountain ranges in the American Southwest. Divided into representative geologic provinces/areas, author Ralph Hopkins specifies distinct geologic or scenic features and provides information about what makes each province unique. He describes each hike from the perspective of the geologic evolution of the landscape while exploring basic geologic concepts and providing a framework for understanding the major forces that have shaped the land. Hopkins' stunning color photography brings the Four Corners Region to life in dazzling detail.

Get a rock-solid grasp on geology Geology is the study of the earth's history as well as the physical and chemical processes that continue to shape the earth today. Jobs in the geosciences are expected to increase over the next decade, which will increase geology-related jobs well above average projection for all occupations in the coming years. Geology For Dummies is the most accessible book on the market for anyone who needs to get a handle on the subject, whether you?re looking to supplement classroom learning or are simply interested in earth sciences. Presented in a straightforward, trusted format, it features a thorough introduction to the study of the earth, its materials, and its processes. Tracks to a typical college-level introductory geology course An 8-page color insert includes photos of rocks, minerals, and geologic marvels Covers geological processes; rock records and geologic times; matter, minerals, and rock; and more Geology For Dummies is an excellent classroom supplement for all students who enroll in introductory geology courses, from geology majors to those who choose earth science courses as electives.

Geotrekking in Southeastern Arabia. A Guide to Locations of World-Class Geology Geotrekking in Southeastern Arabia. A Guide to Locations of World-Class Geology

Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Special Publications Series. Geotrekking in Southeastern Arabia presents the world’s most diverse geology and reveals some of the unique rocks that were once covered under shallow seas and are now sub-aerially exposed. This guidebook describes various routes that leads to specific locations for viewing the distinctive and world class geology of the United Arab Emirates and Oman. Each route includes specific directions, satellite images, illustrations, and explanations that can help with locating the outstanding geology of the area. Certain sites preseve the world class ophiolites – a section of the Earth's oceanic curst and the underlying upper mantle that has been uplifted and exposed above sea level and often emplaced onto continental crustal rocks, a unique process of the Earth described by plate tectonics. Some salient features of this guidebook include: – UAE and Oman are situated in the south east coast of the Arabian Peninsula, which is very well known for its vast reserves of oil and natural gas, hence this book is of great interest to exploration geologists – Mountains of the UAE and Oman are the world’s largest and best preserved ophiolite – a slice of the deep ocean crust that has been forced by tectonic forces onto a continental crust – Within the mountains of these regions are sections of the deep Earth, rarely exposed anywhere – pieces of the Earth’s underlying mantle and the lower parts of its oceanic crust – Other characteristic features include deep sea sediments and volcanic rocks that were erupted by submarine volcanoes – Among mineral ores, cpper deposits were commonly formed at ancient, deep sea, hydrothermal vents – Some of the groundwater flowing out of ophiolite rocks reacts with the atmosphere to precipitate calcite and form vast pools of water that appear as blue swimming pools – The shallow land and high evaporation conditions in the western region of the UAE forms giant, salt-lined mudcracks and the growth of gypsum clusters called “desert roses” – Stromatolites, colonies of cyanobacteria that are probably some of the oldest living species on Earth are also very common in this region – Some dunes in UAE rise upto 160 m above evaporative salt plains – Rare occurrence of 100 million-year-old pillow lavas, which form underwater, uniquely preserved as if they erupted yesterday – Many other geologic marvels exist in a region known more for its oil and gas geology

Economic Geology. Principles and Practice Economic Geology. Principles and Practice

Humanity’s ever-increasing hunger for mineral raw materials, caused by a growing global population and ever increasing standards of living, has resulted in economic geology becoming a subject of urgent importance. This book provides a broad panorama of mineral deposits, covering their origin and geological characteristics, the principles of the search for ores and minerals, and the investigation of newly found deposits. Practical and environmental issues that arise during the life cycle of a mine and after its closure are addressed, with an emphasis on sustainable and «green» mining. The central scientific theme of the book is to place the extraordinary variability of mineral deposits in the frame of fundamental geological processes. The book is written for earth science students and practicing geologists worldwide. Professionals in administration, resource development, mining, mine reclamation, metallurgy, and mineral economics will also find the text valuable. Economic Geology is a fully revised translation of the the fifth edition of the German language text Mineralische und Energie-Rohstoffe. Coal Geology, second edition, offers a thoroughly revised and updated edition of this popular book which provides a comprehensive overview of the field of coal geology. Coal Geology covers all aspects of coal geology in one volume, bridging the gap between the academic aspects and the practical role of geology in the coal industry. The object of the book is to provide the reader with a with a description of the origins of coal together with the physical and chemical properties of coal and coal petrology before proceeding to cover all areas of coal exploration, production and use. Bridges the gap between academic aspects of coal geology and the practical role of geology in the coal industry Examines historical and stratigraphical geology, together with mining, environmental issues, geophysics and hydrogeology and the marketing of coal Defines worldwide coal resource classifications and methods of calculation Addresses the alternative uses of coal as a source of energy, together with the environmental implications of coal usage Includes improved illustrations including a colour section Offers a global approach covering expanding fields in America, China and India The truly global approach, drawn from the international experiences of the author, recognizes the growing role of coal use in emerging markets. With fully revised coverage of the latest modelling techniques, environmental legislation, equipment and recording methods, the second edition offers a truly invaluable resource for anyone studying, researching or working in the field of coal geology, geotechnical and mining engineering and environmental science.
