Повествование идет от лица 25-летнего молодого человека, уволенного с очередной работы из-за своих нравственных принципов идущих в разрез с устоявшимися в обществе нормами. Виталий Левандовский не находит никакого интереса в том, чтобы работать менеджером и уговаривать людей покупать не нужные им, на его взгляд, товары и услуги. Но ничего другого, как обнаруживает главный герой, современный мир предложить ему не может. Рассказ начинается с того, что главный герой оказывается в гостях у своего знакомого врача психотерапевта Лёни. Который считает Виталия весьма самобытным человеком, поэтому и пригласил его, чтобы познакомить с друзьями. Отношения с гостями, да и вообще с людьми у Виталия не особо ладятся, так как ему не нравятся их стремления казаться лучше, чем они есть, произносить то, что они не думают, делать то, что им неинтересно и т.п. Это все приводит к тому, что Виталий крайне неуверенно себя чувствует в обществе и старательно избегает всяческих форм дружбы, хороших отношений и так далее. Тем ни менее Виталий, вопреки собственный убеждениям, обладает редкостной обворожительной харизмой, которая притягивает к нему самых разных людей, зачастую желающих с ним пооткровенничать на совершенно неожиданные темы. После ссоры с дракой с одним из гостей Лёни Виталий выходит на улицу, где вынужден скитаться некоторое время до назначенного ему ранее собеседования. Во время прогулки по центру Санкт-Петербурга Виталий размышляет о ценностях современного мира на примере знакомых ему людей, так же во время скитаний с ним происходят разные встречи и приключения из которых он не выходит победителем. Пытаясь наполнить оставшееся после собеседования время хоть какой-то активностью Виталий по разным делам слоняется то в центре, то по окраинам, отмечая неправдоподобный, но вполне реальный контраст и по возможности пытается помочь самым разным людям самыми различными способами.
