In the opinion of the present study, a masterwork of literature is a work that teaches human beings how to live, in a carefully constructed artifact; in venerable terms, a work that constructs a fable (a narrative) whose intellectual function is to convey an idea (what is taught). Every such work is passionately convinced of the seriousness of what is taught; and its passion is strictly disciplined by a narrative divided into parts that are internally coherent, and that appear in an order that cannot be changed. All five of the masterworks analyzed in the present study passionately teach, in splendid artifacts, that Christianity is adequate to the dangers of life, and capable of irradiating the human soul. The indispensable reference of all five is the Christian Bible; the God is the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit; the aspiration is salvation. The intent of all five–Spenser's The Faerie Queene (Book One), Shakespeare's Macbeth, Milton's Paradise Lost, Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter, and Dostoyevsky's Crime and Punishment–is thus ad dei gloriam, the glorification of the God of Christianity.

«The Centre for Irish and Celtic Studies at the University of Ulster hosted at Coleraine, between the 24th and 26th August 2000, a very successful and informative conference on ‘Celtic Literatures in the Twentieth Century’. The lectures and the discussions were of a high standard, and it was the intention of the organisers to edit and publish the proceedings as soon as possible thereafter. Unfortunately, due to dif culties in assembling some of the papers, this was not possible and, consequently, publication has been delayed much longer than was originally anticipated. Despite this delay, we feel that those papers which we have received merit publication at this time, not only because of their intrinsicmerits, but also because they represent the views of the authors on their respective topics at the turn of the twenty rst century and will hopefully be of value to those interested in the state of the modern Celtic literatures.»

В данном учебном пособии рассматриваются основные этапы развития английской и американской литературы, начиная с древнейших времен до наших дней. В книге даются краткие сведения об эпохе, в которую жил тот или иной писатель, о литературных направлениях, а также жизнеописание и характеристика творчества писателя и анализ основных его произведений. Цель пособия – познакомить учащихся с выдающимися писателями Англии и Америки и их произведениями и способствовать пробуждению у учащихся интереса к прозе и поэзии на английском языке.
