Sri Aurobindo (1872-1950), ademas de filosofo, poeta y politico, fue un yogui y un Maestro espiritual, en el sentido mas alto que la tradicion hindu concede a este termino. Sri Aurobindo encarna el ideal del sabio, tal como ha sido concebido en las mas importantes tradiciones espirituales de la humanidad, y ademas transforma la concepcion del mismo ofreciendo una nueva imagen mas completa, sintesis superadora de las anteriores nociones del sabio y de la sabiduria.Enmarcado en la tradicion hindu, pero habiendo recibido una formacion occidental, Aurobindo se convierte en uno de los pioneros de la sintesis Oriente-Occidente, y junto a Mirra Alfassa (conocido como «La Madre») elabora un pensamiento y un yoga a la altura de nuestro tiempo: una filosofia integral articulada en torno a la nocion de una emergente Conciencia-Energia supramental que el ser humano tiene la oportunidad historica de encarnar, participando asi en la mutacion que esta teniendo lugar entre nosotros.

Sri Aurobindo was very emphatic in stating that only he could write truly about himself; but he never wrote any comprehensive or systematic account of his life. Only in his correspondence with his disciples and others he sometimes explained points by incidentally referring to some event in his own life or some experience in his own Yogic development. Also on a few occasions he corrected misleading statements concerning him published in some journals and books and gave notes about some points in his life to three of his biographers who had submitted their manuscripts to him for verification. Some of this material has been compiled and presented in a systematic arrangement. In addition, statements by the Mother about Sri Aurobindo and his life and work were added.

Sri Aurobindo has commented the lives and teachings of Krishna, Buddha, Christ and Ramakrishna in a large number of writings. In this present study his most important statements on the Avatars of the past are presented and discussed in detail along with utterances of the Mother which throw more light on the respective subjects. Thus we gain deep insight into Sri Aurobindo’s integral vision of the spiritual development of humanity and its future destiny.
