В 1893 году в рассказе «Последнее дело Холмса» автор пытался покончить со своим героем, предав его смерти. Поклонники сыщика, чей интерес только возрастал, были возмущены. Волею судеб в 1901 году Дойль услышал легенды о гигантской собаке-привидении, а так как выдумывать нового героя было ни к чему, он воскресил Холмса, чтобы уже не расставаться с ним до конца своих дней.
