Encountering ETI weaves together scientific knowledge and spiritual faith in a cosmic context. It explores consequences of Contact between terrestrial intelligent life (TI) and extraterrestrial intelligent life (ETI). Humans will face cosmic displacement if there are other complex, technologically advanced intelligent beings in the universe; our economic structures and religious beliefs might need substantial revision. On Earth or in space, humans could encounter benevolent ETI (solicitous of our striving for maturity as a species) or malevolent ETI (seeking our land and goods to benefit themselves, claiming that their «superior civilization» gives them the right)–or meet both types of species. Earth Encounters of the Third Kind described by credible witnesses (including American Indian elders) suggest that both have arrived already: some shut down U.S. and U.S.S.R. ICBM missiles to promote peace; others mutilated cattle or abducted people, perhaps to acquire physiological data on biota for scientific study or for other, unknown purposes. Sci-fi movies such as Avatar and novels like The Martian Chronicles describe humans as malevolent ETI aliens: we do to others what we fear others will do to us. A shared and evolving spiritual materiality could enable humanity to overcome cosmic displacement, and guide TI and ETI in a common quest for meaning and wellbeing on cosmic common ground.

Linda Schaefer began her career as a journalist for CNN in 1985 but found she couldn’t abandon her first love – photography. She met and photographed Mother Teresa for the first time on June 15, 1995, while on freelance assignment for The Georgia Bulletin , the newspaper for the Archdiocese of Atlanta. Less than two months later, Linda found herself in Calcutta, where she had the rare opportunity to document the work of Mother Teresa and the Missionaries of Charity. Linda took thousands of photographs, and through this experience she began to feel that this work might be her calling in life. Linda attended both the beatification and the canonization of Mother Teresa, and she has returned to Calcutta twice in her quest to learn as much as possible about the saint and the work of the Missionaries of Charity. Through these experiences, Linda met and interviewed six of Mother Teresa’s closest friends, confidants, and coworkers in the vineyard of Christ. These interviews became the groundwork for Encountering Mother Teresa . Recognized by respected magazines and newspapers, her work has appeared in The New York Times, Catholic Digest, Time, Newsweek, GQ , the Los Angeles Times , and Stern , to name a few. Schaefer has spoken about her experiences with Mother Teresa and the Missionaries of Charity to audiences throughout the country, including Catholic Charities and multiple interdenominational charitable organizations. In 2007, Schaefer accepted a faculty position at East Central University in Ada, Oklahoma. In 2014, she was offered a position at a woman’s university in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. She completed her contract at Dar Al-Hekma University in January 2019 and has resumed her life in Oklahoma.
