The nature of these ageless odes, in large part, remains a mystery even to me, and I welcome the occasion to explore them with you, my brothers and sisters. I do not write them to sell nor to glorify myself, but rather I pass them on as a sort of divine pact that I have made with their Source. I ask simply that you turn the page and see if they call out to you.

Действие романа происходит в мае 1692 года на территории Белой Руси, входившей в состав Речи Посполитой, в Мирском замке, под Минском. Главный герой романа – Владислав Славута, шляхтич из древнего, но захудавшего православного рода – расследует убийство служанки княгини Радзивилл, и одновременно вспоминает прожитую жизнь. Анализируя события, свидетелями которых он был, Славута испытывает противоречивые чувства: он всю жизнь воевал за польскую корону, но на закате своей жизни приходит к выводу, что в будущем Речь Посполиту ожидает неминуемый распад, а русские земли Великого Княжества Литовского воссоединятся с Россией. Сюжет произведения вымышлен, но большинство персонажей являются реальными историческими лицами.
