A classic work of religious philosophy, «Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion» is David Hume's examination of the nature of God. David Hume's philosophy, empiricism, rests upon the idea that all rational belief must be supported by experiential evidence. It is within the scope of this philosophy that Hume examines the nature of God and asks the question as to whether or not man's belief in God can be supported by experience. This exposition takes place in the guise of a dialogue between three characters who each take different points of view on the subject. «Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion» is an interesting examination of faith from a philosophical perspective and a must read for any student of philosophy or religion.

The story begins by describing the ancestors of Sir Arthur Jermyn, a British nobleman. His great-great-great-grandfather, Sir Wade Jermyn, had been an early explorer of the Congo region, whose books on a mysterious white civilization there had been ridiculed. He had been confined to an asylum in 1765. Lovecraft describes how the Jermyn family has a peculiar physical appearance that began to appear in the children of Wade Jermyn and his mysterious and reclusive wife, who Wade claimed was Portuguese.

The story projects Twain’s lifelong struggles with his conscience. Here the conscience admits to being the “most pitiless enemy” of its host, whom it is supposed to “improve” but only tyrannizes with gusto while refusing to praise the host for anything.
