Rhetoric Rhetoric

Автор: Aristotle

Год издания: 0000

Written sometime in the 4th Century BC, Aristotle’s “Rhetoric” is the definitive treatise on the art of persuasive public speaking. The art of oratorical persuasion was an essential skill for the successful politician during the days of ancient Greece and Aristotle’s “Rhetoric” is considered one of the greatest works from antiquity on the subject. Like many of the surviving works attributable to Aristotle, “Rhetoric” was not intended for public dissemination, but was likely composed from notes taken by Aristotle’s students as they absorbed his lectures. Aristotle provides a detailed analysis of the basic elements of effective speaking in the forum of public debate. Aristotle felt that persuasive discourse was essential for reaching consensus on public issues and, in “Rhetoric”, makes the important and modern argument that such persuasive speaking in the public forum should be based on logic and knowledge rather than on emotion and manipulation. While written over two thousand years ago, the modern student of political science and law will find much that is useful and applicable to their respective disciplines in this work. This edition includes a biographical afterword.

Musical Rhetoric. Foundations and Annotation Schemes Musical Rhetoric. Foundations and Annotation Schemes

Автор: Patrick Saint-Dizier

Год издания:

Discourse analysis and rhetoric are very much developed in communication, linguistics, cognitive science and artificial intelligence. Besides theoretical investigations, discourse analysis is central in a number of application areas such as dialogue and negotiation, the semantic web, question answering or authoring systems. Music is also a natural language, more abstract and mathematical, which follows very strict construction principles. However, there is very limited and no recent literature on Music Discourse analysis using computational principles. This book aims at developing a central issue in musical discourse: modeling rhetoric and argumentation. It also contributes to the development of high-level multimedia annotation schemes for non-verbal communication.

Politics as Usual. What Lies Behind the Pro-Poor Rhetoric Politics as Usual. What Lies Behind the Pro-Poor Rhetoric

Автор: Thomas Pogge W.

Год издания:

Worldwide, human lives are rapidly improving. Education, health-care, technology, and political participation are becoming ever more universal, empowering human beings everywhere to enjoy security, economic sufficiency, equal citizenship, and a life in dignity. To be sure, there are some specially difficult areas disfavoured by climate, geography, local diseases, unenlightened cultures or political tyranny. Here progress is slow, and there may be set-backs. But the affluent states and many international organizations are working steadily to extend the blessings of modernity through trade and generous development assistance, and it won't be long until the last pockets of severe oppression and poverty are gone. Heavily promoted by Western governments and media, this comforting view of the world is widely shared, at least among the affluent. Pogge's new book presents an alternative view: Poverty and oppression persist on a massive scale; political and economic inequalities are rising dramatically both intra-nationally and globally. The affluent states and the international organizations they control knowingly contribute greatly to these evils – selfishly promoting rules and policies harmful to the poor while hypocritically pretending to set and promote ambitious development goals. Pogge's case studies include the $1/day poverty measurement exercise, the cosmetic statistics behind the first Millennium Development Goal, the War on Terror, and the proposed relaxation of the constraints on humanitarian intervention. A powerful moral analysis that shows what Western states would do if they really cared about the values they profess.
