The Symposium (Ancient Greek: ?????????, Symposion [symposi?on]) is a philosophical text by Plato dated c. 385–370 BC. It depicts a friendly contest of extemporaneous speeches given by a group of notable men attending a banquet. The men include the philosopher Socrates, the general and political figure Alcibiades, and the comic playwright Aristophanes. The speeches are to be given in praise of Eros, the god of love and desire. In the Symposium, Eros is recognized both as erotic love and as a phenomenon capable of inspiring courage, valor, great deeds and works, and vanquishing man's natural fear of death. It is seen as transcending its earthly origins and attaining spiritual heights. This extraordinary elevation of the concept of love raises a question of whether some of the most extreme extents of meaning might be intended as humor or farce. Eros is almost always translated as «love», and the English word has its own varieties and ambiguities that provide additional challenges to the effort to understand the Eros of ancient Athens. The event depicted in the Symposium is a banquet attended by a group of men, who have come to the symposium, which was, in ancient Greece, a traditional part of the same banquet that took place after the meal, when drinking for pleasure was accompanied by music, dancing, recitals, or conversation. The setting means that the participants will be drinking wine, meaning that the men might be induced to say things they wouldn't say elsewhere or when sober. They might speak more frankly, or take more risks, or else be prone to hubris—they might even be inspired to make speeches that are particularly heartfelt and noble. The host has challenged the men to deliver, each, in turn, an encomium—a speech in praise of Love (Eros). Though other participants comply with this challenge, Socrates notably refuses to participate in such an act of praise and instead takes a very different approach to the topic. The party takes place at the house of the tragedian Agathon in Athens. This dialogue is one of Plato's major works, and is appreciated for both its philosophical content and its literary qualities.

The Science and Practice of Stuttering Treatment: A Symposium is a comprehensive resource for practitioners and researchers that spans the scientific basis and clinical management of stutters in people of all ages, from preschoolers to adults. Written by an international team of clinical and research leaders in the field of speech and language pathology, as well as scientists from the fields of epidemiology and neurology, the book offers a truly comprehensive coverage of contemporary stuttering management. Each chapter provides information on the 'Theoretical Basis of the Treatment', 'Outline of the Treatment', 'Scientific Evidence for the Treatment', 'Advantages and Disadvantages of the Treatment', 'Planned Future Empirical Development', and conclude with an in-depth critical review. This book is a must-have resource for speech and language pathologists, researchers and educators worldwide. FEATURES: Offers a rigorous critical review of each treatment Written by leading international experts in the field Completely up to date with the latest clinical and scientific research “This book is the output from the Research Symposium held in Croatia in 2010. This text is unusual in that it not only reflects the content of the Symposium presentations, but also reports the discussion that the presentations generated. The discussions that ensued were recorded and transcribed… The consistent organisation of each paper in the collection allows the reader to quickly access the critical information and to make direct comparisons across therapies… (and) provides the reader with a comprehensive overview of a variety of speech restructuring programs… The advantages/disadvantages and the discussion sections in each chapter help the reader with appraisal of the material presented and to make some judgements about generality and value… The reader feels exposed to the atmosphere and dynamics of the Symposium in a way that is rarely captured outside the conference auditorium.” – A review from Sharon Millard (PhD., MRCSLT), Research Lead and Expert Speech and Language Therapist, The Michael Palin Centre, Whittington Health, London, UK

Within the framework of the Sixth I-ESA International Conference, supported by the INTEROP VLab (International Virtual Laboratory on Enterprise Interoperability, http://www.interop-vlab.eu), three workshops and a Doctoral Symposium have been organized in order to strengthen some key topics related to interoperability for enterprise applications and software. The workshops were selected to complement the conference topics, leaving more time to researchers for brainstorming and then coming up, at the end of the workshops, with new research directions for the future. The goal of the workshop “Standards – a Foundation for Interoperability” is to increase awareness and understanding of interoperability standards as a fundamental need. The workshop “Use of MDI/SOA Concepts in Industry” promotes the application of MDI (Model-Driven Interoperability) combined with SOA (Services Oriented Architecture) and the associated technology (BPM, Enterprise Modeling, ontology, mediation, model transformation, etc.) in industry. The workshop on “Dynamic Management across Interoperating Enterprises” investigates the need for enhancements to current business management systems and processes to address the needs of global trading across enterprises utilizing the new service-oriented Internet. Finally, the Doctoral Symposium has given the opportunity for students involved in the preparation of their PhDs in this emerging area to present and discuss their research issues and ideas with senior researchers.
