В сборнике суммируются результаты исследований ведущих российских африканистов по широкому кругу вопросов, связанных с исторической самоидентификацией африканцев. В центре внимания – формы и каналы трансформации межрасовых и межэтнических отношений и типы этнополитического сознания в странах Тропической Африки (на материале ЮАР, Эфиопии, Руанды, Бурунди и др.), а также в африканских общинах за ее пределами (СССР/Россия, США, Великобритания) в колониальную и постколониальную эпохи. Различные аспекты проблемы рассматриваются в широком контексте противостояния и взаимодействия традиционных, псевдотрадиционных и современных форм сознания и поведения. Проводится комплексный анализ теорий африканского национализма (афроцентризм, панафриканизм и др.), выявляются природа и причины усиления межрасовой и межэтнической враждебности и пути ее преодоления в современной Африке и в странах, где существует африканская диаспора.
