El autor escribio estos dos cuentos, ahora juntos, con variantes en la tercera edicion, en 1994 y 1995, poco antes de que apareciera la moda de las novelas negras y policiacas italianas, Son obras basadas en las figuras de Vittorio D’Aiazzo, comisario y luego subjefe de policia, y Ranieri Velli, su ayudante y amigo, personajes que, uno u ambos, vuelven en otras obras novelas y cuentos de Guido Pagliarino: hace muy poco tiempo que ha salido de las imprentas de la editorial Genesi la ultima novela sobre su personaje de D’Aiazzo, la precuela «La furia de los insultados». En todas estas obras se puede advertir una atencion por las psicologias y los ambientes, todos en un pasado mas o menos reciente. Estaban y estan destinadas a los lectores de narrativa en general que, aunque no desdenen obras que tratan sobre delitos, no tienen gustos picantes. Por tanto, no espereis cuentos al estilo de Raymond Chandler o James Ellroy o, quedandonos en Europa, de Manuel Vazquez Montalban. Escribi estos dos cuentos largos en 1994 y 1995, poco antes de que apareciera la moda de las novelas negras y policiacas italianas, obras basadas en las figuras de Vittorio D’Aiazzo, comisario y luego subjefe de policia, y Ranieri Velli, su ayudante y amigo, personajes que, uno u ambos, vuelven en otras obras mias: hace muy poco tiempo que ha salido de las imprentas de la editorial Genesi la ultima novela sobre el personaje de D’Aiazzo, la precuela «La furia de los insultados». En estas obras siempre he prestado en primer lugar atencion a las psicologias y los ambientes, todos en un pasado mas o menos reciente y con algo de nostalgia por esa Turin de mi adolescencia y juventud que ya no existe. Estaban y estan destinadas a los lectores de narrativa en general que, aunque no desdenen obras que tratan sobre delitos, no tienen gustos picantes. En este libro la accion se desarrolla en un periodo todavia pre-informatico, entre finales de la decada de 1950 e inicios de la de 1960, en una Turin donde, en el area de Porta Palazzo y alrededores, donde transcurre la primera obra, no vivian todavia, como hoy, practicamente solo extracomunitarios, sino ancianos piamonteses jubilados, originarios de la zona, y familias jovenes de inmigrantes del sur; una ciudad donde arterias principales, como el Corso Vittorio Emanuele II y el Corso Regina Margherita casi veian mas medios publicos de transporte que privados. Por estos ultimos y por los contraviales circulaban muchas bicicletas, algunas a motor, mientras que ya se veian los primeros 600 y 500, normalmente comprados a plazos, con kilos de letras, por algun empleado que prosperaba en su carrera o que trabajaba en la reina FIAT, senora hasta hoy de Turin y alrededores. Tambien retumbaban aqui y alla los automoviles de mayor precio, adquiridos por exponentes de la burguesia alta y media, como el FIAT 1400 y el Alfa Romeo 1900 (este usado tambien por la policia: la llamada pantera) o como el fantasmagorico y apropiado para los hijos jovenes de los ricos Lancia Aurelia Sport 1200, el de la pelicula «La escapada», que competia directamente con el Alfa Giulietta Spider 1300. Con los automoviles y las bicicletas circulaban las Vespa y Lambretta, junto a algunas motocicletas de pequena cilindrada. Aquella era una epoca en la que no existian todavia el ordenador personal ni el movil, todas las familias tenian radio, pero poquisimas televisor, en blanco y negro y solo con el canal de la RAI: pero no habia publicidad, salvo el simpatico y hoy en dia casi mitico «Carosello». Una Turin, en suma, en la que un investigador podia trabajar casi como sus colegas de los clasicos de la novela europea negra y policiaca de los anos 1920 a 1950.
