Фотоальбом – результат многолетней работы Мемориального музея немецких антифашистов по реконструкции малоизвестных трагических страниц II мировой войны, рассказывающих о жизни немецких военнопленных в советских лагерях. Для миллионов немцев плен стал сильнейшим потрясением, оставившим глубокую психическую и физическую травму. Несмотря на стремление советских властей сохранить жизнь военнопленным, суровый климат, плохое обмундирование и чрезвычайно скудное и непривычное питание в сочетании с постоянной депрессией и неуверенностью в своей дальнейшей судьбе привели к большим жертвам. В основу фотоальбома «Сквозь плен» легли фотографии известных военных корреспондентов В. Кинеловского, В. Санько, А. Шайхета, А. Архипова, А. Гаранина, А. Грибовского, М. Редкина, А. Сорокина, Е. Капыта, Е. Капустянского, А. Яковлева, В. Совенко и др., хранящиеся в фондах Мемориального музея немецких антифашистов.
