This book describes in a comprehensive manner the components and systems of fiber optic communications and networks. The first section explains the theory of multimode and single-mode fibers, then the technological features, including manufacturing, cabling, and connecting. The second section describes the various components (passive and active optical components, integrated optics, opto-electronic transmitters and receivers, and optical amplifiers) used in fiber optic systems. Finally, the optical transmission system design is explained, and applications to optical networks and fiber optic sensors are detailed, including the most recent developments in switched networks, high bit-rate systems, and FTTH or radio over fiber.

Сергей Магид (р. 1947 г., Ленинград) начал писать стихи в 1963 г. В 1970–80-е гг., не имея возможности официальных публикаций, печатался в ленинградских и рижских самиздатских журналах. В 1981–1988 гг. входил в ленинградское неформальное объединение поэтов, прозаиков и переводчиков «Клуб-81». В 1985–1990 гг. принимал участие в подготовке создания Ленинградского народного фронта. В 1990 г. уехал из СССР. Живет в Праге. Работает библиотекарем, пишет историософские и культурологические тексты. Первая официально изданная книга стихотворений «Зона служенья» (2003), включившая избранное с 1970 по 2000 г., вышла в издательстве «НЛО». Вторая книга стихотворений «В долине Элах» («Водолей», 2010) вошла в шорт-лист Премии им. Андрея Белого (2010) и Волошинской премии (2011). Философские заметки «За гранью этого пейзажа: Дневники 1997–2001 гг.» (2011) представили читателю С. Магида как глубокого оригинального мыслителя. Третью книгу стихотворений «Angulus / Opticus» составили стихи 2009–2011 гг.
