Для миллионов немцев плен стал сильнейшим потрясением, оставившим глубокую психическую и физическую травму. Несмотря на стремление советских властей сохранить жизнь военнопленным, суровый климат, плохое обмундирование и чрезвычайно скудное и непривычное питание в сочетании с постоянной депрессией и неуверенностью в своей дальнейшей судьбе привели к большим жертвам.
