Frederick Merrick White (1859-1935) was a pioneer in many fields – the spy story, the detective story, and most especially the epic disaster story. His «Doom of London» series (1903), consisting of six tales in which various catastrophes beset London (including diphtheria, killer smog, and a devastanzing freeze), proved quite popular. The Yorkshire Observer wrote of him: “Mr. White is a master of the breathless pace which whirls a reader along whether he will or not." "Dark spruce forest frowned on either side the frozen waterway.
