Northern Italy's famous Alta Via long-distance walking routes are spread across the Dolomites, running roughly north to south and reaching as far as the Austrian border. There are six of these routes, and they increase in difficulty: Alta Via 1 has few exposed sections and is suitable for novice alpine trekkers; AV2 is much more challenging, only suitable for experienced alpine trekkers with a good head for heights, while AVs 3-6 have extended via ferrata sections and considerable exposure. AVs 1 and 2 are described in detail in this guidebook. The 120km AV1 is described over 11 day stages; AV2 covers 160km in 13 days and is more strenuous and technical. Overnight stops are at mountain huts or guesthouses. The demanding AV3-6 routes are described in outline. Now a World Heritage Site, the Italian Dolomites make a first-rate trekking destination. There is an excellent network of paths dotted with welcoming 'rifugi' (mountain huts) in stunning locations, and efficient public transport serving key trekking points. Written by an expert in Italian trekking, with information on the fascinating wartime history of the region, plants and wildlife and also practical considerations such as the best time to go, what to take and hut protocol, this guide offers trekkers all the information they need to enjoy the mountains to the full. Geotrekking in Southeastern Arabia. A Guide to Locations of World-Class Geology
Автор: Benjamin Jordan R.
Год издания:
Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Special Publications Series. Geotrekking in Southeastern Arabia presents the world’s most diverse geology and reveals some of the unique rocks that were once covered under shallow seas and are now sub-aerially exposed. This guidebook describes various routes that leads to specific locations for viewing the distinctive and world class geology of the United Arab Emirates and Oman. Each route includes specific directions, satellite images, illustrations, and explanations that can help with locating the outstanding geology of the area. Certain sites preseve the world class ophiolites – a section of the Earth's oceanic curst and the underlying upper mantle that has been uplifted and exposed above sea level and often emplaced onto continental crustal rocks, a unique process of the Earth described by plate tectonics. Some salient features of this guidebook include: – UAE and Oman are situated in the south east coast of the Arabian Peninsula, which is very well known for its vast reserves of oil and natural gas, hence this book is of great interest to exploration geologists – Mountains of the UAE and Oman are the world’s largest and best preserved ophiolite – a slice of the deep ocean crust that has been forced by tectonic forces onto a continental crust – Within the mountains of these regions are sections of the deep Earth, rarely exposed anywhere – pieces of the Earth’s underlying mantle and the lower parts of its oceanic crust – Other characteristic features include deep sea sediments and volcanic rocks that were erupted by submarine volcanoes – Among mineral ores, cpper deposits were commonly formed at ancient, deep sea, hydrothermal vents – Some of the groundwater flowing out of ophiolite rocks reacts with the atmosphere to precipitate calcite and form vast pools of water that appear as blue swimming pools – The shallow land and high evaporation conditions in the western region of the UAE forms giant, salt-lined mudcracks and the growth of gypsum clusters called “desert roses” – Stromatolites, colonies of cyanobacteria that are probably some of the oldest living species on Earth are also very common in this region – Some dunes in UAE rise upto 160 m above evaporative salt plains – Rare occurrence of 100 million-year-old pillow lavas, which form underwater, uniquely preserved as if they erupted yesterday – Many other geologic marvels exist in a region known more for its oil and gas geology

This volume contains 23 state-of-the-art papers presented at the Dolomieu Conference on Carbonate Platforms and Dolomitization held in September 1991 in Ortisei, Italy. The conference was co-sponsored by the International Association of Sedimentologists (IAS) and the Society for Sedimentary Geology (SEPM), and marked the 200th anniversary of the 1791 paper by Deodat de Dolomieu describing dolomite in detail for the first time. The papers presented do not aim to give a complete review of the current state of the dolomitic art, but rather discuss important advances and gaps in our knowledge of dolomitization. State-of-the-art papers from worldwide experts. Includes basic science and economic applications.

Trekking in Austria's Hohe Tauern
Автор: Allan Hartley
Год издания:
A guide to four multi-day hut-to-hut trekking routes in Austria's Hohe Tauern region. The Hohe Tauern National Park is the largest in Europe. Within Austria it embraces the provinces of Tirol, Salzburg and Karnten (Carinthia). This guidebook concentrates on three areas – the Reichen, Venediger and Gross Glockner groups.
The Reichen Group Hut-to-Hut Rucksack Route will take five to six days to complete, starting from the resort town of Mayrhofen at the head of the Zillertal valley. The route described is suitable for those with good general mountain walking ability who are surefooted and vertigo free.
The Vendiger Group Hut-to-Hut Rucksack Route traverses the Venediger from south to north over seven days, starting in the Virgental valley at Streden. The route requires no greater skills than those needed to wander safely over the mountain areas of Britain. The eight day Venediger Glacier Tour is better suited to mountaineers. Participants need to have the ability to cross glaciers safely using ropes, ice axes and crampons.
The eight day Glockner Group Hut-to-Hut Rucksack Route is a circular tour around Austria's highest mountain. The route was created to allow hikers to cross through the mountains without having to make difficult glacier crossings and carry ropes and mountaineering equipment.
En route there is ample opportunity to climb some of the peaks and ascents and excursions are described. This book will appeal to groups of mixed ability and those looking to visit the Alps for the first time without the demands of the higher mountains of the western Alps. With lots of practical advice, including on glacier travel, and a comprehensive hut directory.
