Этот американский танк, названный в честь кавалерийского генерала южан, принял боевое крещение в британской армии, в составе 8-го гусарского полка (Kings Royal Irish Hussar), воевавшего в Северной Африке. МЗ/М5 General Stuart стал самым массовым легким танком Второй Мировой – в общей сложности было произведено около 23 тысяч «стюартов», из которых 1232 поставлены по Лендлизу в СССР. И хотя наши танкисты не жаловали эту машину за слабое вооружение, ей довелось воевать от Кавказа до Ржева и от Сталинграда и Новороссийска до Вены и Праги, продемонстрировав выдающиеся динамические характеристики, скорость, подвижность и «работоспособность» – это был «полноценный кавалерийский танк» по американской классификации. Подобно гусарам, некогда незаменимым на поле боя и по праву считавшимся элитой легкой кавалерии, «стюарты» были хороши в разведке и маневренной войне, в стремительных рейдах по вражеским тылам и преследовании отступающего противника. Конечно, против немецких танков у них было мало шансов, зато на Тихоокеанских островах их успешно применяли до конца войны, а огнеметная модификация М5А1 заслуженно именовалась Satan («Сатана»).
