В октябре 1868 г. Вильям Рольстон сообщил Тургеневу, что вышел анонимный перевод «Дыма» на английский язык (издатель Ричард Бентли), а 27 ноября того же года он поместил в «Pall Mail Gazette» анонимную рецензию, в которой квалифицировал перевод как неудачный, искажающий смысл романа. Аналогичная рецензия была напечатана также в журнале «Athenaeum». Кроме того, Рольстон посоветовал Тургеневу обратиться с протестом к издателю названной газеты.
