Americans are generally apprehensive about what they perceive as big government—especially when it comes to measures that target their bodies. Soda taxes, trans fat bans, and calorie counts on menus have all proven deeply controversial. Such interventions, Rachel Louise Moran argues, are merely the latest in a long, albeit often quiet, history of policy motivated by economic, military, and familial concerns. In Governing Bodies , Moran traces the tension between the intimate terrain of the individual citizen's body and the public ways in which the federal government has sought to shape the American physique over the course of the twentieth century. Distinguishing her subject from more explicit and aggressive government intrusion into the areas of sexuality and reproduction, Moran offers the concept of the «advisory state»—the use of government research, publicity, and advocacy aimed at achieving citizen support and voluntary participation to realize social goals. Instituted through outside agencies and glossy pamphlets as well as legislation, the advisory state is government out of sight yet intimately present in the lives of citizens. The activities of such groups as the Civilian Conservation Corps, the Children's Bureau, the President's Council on Physical Fitness, and the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) implement federal body projects in subtle ways that serve to mask governmental interference in personal decisions about diet and exercise. From advice-giving to height-weight standards to mandatory nutrition education, these tactics not only empower and conceal the advisory state but also maintain the illusion of public and private boundaries, even as they become blurred in practice. Weaving together histories of the body, public policy, and social welfare, Moran analyzes a series of discrete episodes to chronicle the federal government's efforts to shape the physique of its citizenry. Governing Bodies sheds light on our present anxieties over the proper boundaries of state power. Получить ссылку |

Detection and Quantification of Antibodies to Biopharmaceuticals. Practical and Applied Considerations
Автор: Michael Tovey G.
Год издания:
The definitive book on the neutralization of recombinant biopharmaceuticals Recombinant biopharmaceuticals are an important tool for treating a range of illnesses; however, their efficacy can be severely impaired by their immunogenicity. When introduced into the body, these pharmaceuticals can cause the immune system to produce anti-drug antibodies (ADAs) that neutralize their effects. The first and only book to cover neutralization in connection with biopharmaceuticals and the measurement and application of neutralizing antibodies in modern medicine at any real length, Detection and Quantification of Antibodies to Biopharmaceuticals: Practical and Applied Considerations offers a comprehensive and in-depth look at all the principal aspects of the detection and quantification of antibodies that are essential to understanding and responding to the challenges they present. Bringing together a large-scale review of neutralization and biopharmaceuticals and the ability to measure, detect, and apply antibodies to modern science and medicine with international regulatory perspectives, the expectations of regulatory authorities, and the strengths and weaknesses of various assays, the book describes several novel ideas for detecting ADAs. Designed to serve as a resource for biopharmaceutical drug development, the book provides biotechnology companies and pharmaceutical drug development specialists, as well as non-experts, with key insights into the design, optimization, and qualification of assays, the establishment of sampling strategies, the choice of appropriate assay end-points, and data analysis for the detection and quantification of neutralizing antibodies.

Multinational Colleges and Universities: Leading, Governing, and Managing International Branch Campuses. New Directions for Higher Education, Number 155
Автор: Kinser Kevin
Год издания:
Dedicated to the hundreds of practitioners who work at international branch campuses (IBCs), this volume examines the unique challenges ICB professionals face in the leading edge of development in the global higher education sector and how they are unlike those confronted by their colleagues on the home campus. The volume is designed to provide readers with an overview of the IBC phenomenon, as well as provide practical insights from those directly involved in the development of multinational colleges and universities. Editors Jason E. Lane and Kevin Kinser of the Institute for Global Education Policy Studies at State University of New York, and begin with an overview of the development of IBCs. The first chapter, by Jason Lane, traces the history of such institutions and discusses various intentions behind their creation and the roles they play in the host country. The next two chapters deal specifically with issues pertaining to faculty and students. The second chapter focuses on strategies for managing and leading academic staff spread across multiple countries. The third chapter looks at the challenges of replicating the student collegiate experience that exists on the home campus. Subsequent contributing chapters discuss the increasing interest among developing nations to create a community college system similar to that in the United States as well as the global regulatory, legal, and policy environments. At the end of the volume, readers will find an extensive annotated bibliography of nearly a hundred scholarly and policy writings that deal directly with international branch campuses. This bibliography is divided into several sections to help readers navigate the extensive listing. The sections include: General, Arab Gulf, Asia, Development Perspective, Management, Quality, Students, Teaching and Learning, and Trade and Regulation. Each reading is listed only once, though many could be classified under multiple sections. This is the 155th volume of the Jossey-Bass quarterly report series New Directions for Higher Education. It arose out of the long-standing interest of the volume?s editors in understanding the emergence of multinational educational institutions. These interests fostered the development of the Cross-Border Education Research Team (C-BERT), which provided the scholarly foundation for this volume.
