Oxydative Ageing of Polymers Oxydative Ageing of Polymers

Автор: Jacques Verdu

Год издания:

This book aims to rehabilitate kinetic modeling in the domain of polymer ageing, where it has been almost abandoned by the research community. Kinetic modeling is a key step for lifetime prediction, a crucial problem in many industrial domains in which needs cannot be satisfied by the common empirical methods. The book proposes a renewed approach of lifetime prediction in polymer oxidative ageing. This approach is based on kinetic models built from relatively simple mechanistic schemes but integrating physical processes (oxygen diffusion and stabilizer transport), and use property (for instance mechanical failure) changes. An important chapter is dedicated to radiation-induced oxidation and its most important applications: radiochemical ageing at low dose rates and photo-chemical ageing under solar radiation. There is also a chapter devoted to the problem of ageing under coupled oxidation and mechanical loading.

Transformers and Inductors for Power Electronics. Theory, Design and Applications Transformers and Inductors for Power Electronics. Theory, Design and Applications

Автор: Wolfle W.H.

Год издания:

Based on the fundamentals of electromagnetics, this clear and concise text explains basic and applied principles of transformer and inductor design for power electronic applications. It details both the theory and practice of inductors and transformers employed to filter currents, store electromagnetic energy, provide physical isolation between circuits, and perform stepping up and down of DC and AC voltages. The authors present a broad range of applications from modern power conversion systems. They provide rigorous design guidelines based on a robust methodology for inductor and transformer design. They offer real design examples, informed by proven and working field examples. Key features include: emphasis on high frequency design, including optimisation of the winding layout and treatment of non-sinusoidal waveforms a chapter on planar magnetic with analytical models and descriptions of the processing technologies analysis of the role of variable inductors, and their applications for power factor correction and solar power unique coverage on the measurements of inductance and transformer capacitance, as well as tests for core losses at high frequency worked examples in MATLAB, end-of-chapter problems, and an accompanying website containing solutions, a full set of instructors’ presentations, and copies of all the figures. Covering the basics of the magnetic components of power electronic converters, this book is a comprehensive reference for students and professional engineers dealing with specialised inductor and transformer design. It is especially useful for senior undergraduate and graduate students in electrical engineering and electrical energy systems, and engineers working with power supplies and energy conversion systems who want to update their knowledge on a field that has progressed considerably in recent years.

‘A triumph’ – Time OutTransformer is the only complete and comprehensive telling of the Lou Reed story.Legendary songwriter and guitarist Lou Reed passed away on the 27th October 2013, but his musical influence is assured. Now discover the true story of the Velvet Underground pioneer in this update of Bockris’s classic biography.Transformer: The Complete Lou Reed Story follows the great songwriter and singer through the series of transformations that define each period of his fifty year career. It opens with the teenage electroshock treatments that dominated his memories of childhood and never stops revealing layer after layer of this complex and often anguished artist and man. Transformer is based on Lou’s collaborations with the hardest and most romantic artists of his times, from John Cale, Andy Warhol, and Nico, through David Bowie, Robert Wilson, Laurie Anderson and the ghost of Edgar Alan Poe. Rippling underneath everything he did are Lou’s relationships with his various muses, from his college sweetheart to his three wives (and one drag queen).Leading Lou Reed biographer, Victor Bockris – who knew Lou throughout the Rachel Years, from Rock ‘n’ Roll Animal to the Bells – updates his original biography in the wake of Lou’s death. Through new interviews and photos, he reveals the many transformations of this larger-than-life character, including his final shift from Rock Monster to the Prince Charming he had always wanted to be in the twenty years he spent with the love of his life, Laurie Anderson . Except with Lou, you could never really know what might happen next…Including previously unseen photographs and contributions from Lou’s innermost circle and collaborators that include similarly esteemed artists such as Andy Warhol and David Bowie, Transformer is as captivating and vivid a read as befits an American master.

The Longevity Book: Live stronger. Live better. The art of ageing well. The Longevity Book: Live stronger. Live better. The art of ageing well.

Автор: Cameron Diaz

Год издания:

From Cameron Diaz, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Body Book, comes a fresh, personal, and authoritative examination of the art and science of growing older and a roadmap for abundant health and resilience as we age. When Cameron Diaz wrote The Body Book, she was on a mission to help educate young women about how their bodies function, empowering them to make better-informed choices about their health instead of heeding the advice of the latest headline or trend. So she interviewed doctors, scientists, nutritionists and a host of other experts, and then shared what she'd learned with young women everywhere in a comprehensive volume hailed as 'smart', 'brimming with science' and 'the real deal'. Once again Cameron Diaz is on a mission. But this time, she's starting a conversation with her peers on a topic that is virtually taboo in our society: the ageing female body. In The Longevity Book, she will share everything she's learned about the ageing process from top medical experts and researchers, as well as her own thoughts, opinions, and experiences on a topic that is as essential to our health as it is emotionally charged and culturally neglected. The Longevity Book will explore what history, biology, neuroscience and the women's health movement can teach us about maintaining optimal health as we transition from our thirties to midlife. From how growing older impacts various bodily systems to the biological differences in the way ageing effects men and women; the latest science on telomeres and slowing the rate of cognitive decline to how meditation heals us and why love, friendship and laughter matter for health. The Longevity Book will offer an all-encompassing, holistic look at how the female body ages – and what we can all do to age better. Cameron offers women a compassionate, informative and intimate tour through the next volume of life.
